A place small enough to be relaxing and informal but modern and welcoming to an independent holidaymaker/tourist. Everything is within walking distance so you don't need a car to move about the town. The beach is huge and stretches for miles. It's clean with facilities on site. Ancora was super and a great home base to explore...
Ancora was super and a great home base to explore surrounding villages. Watched soccer games in Ancora. Windsurfed in Viana do Castelo, walked to Moledo and Caminha, and had lunch in La Guarda, Spain. Abundance of restaurants and bakeries. Rented bikes and a car to explore the countryside.

It is a low key town.
It is a low key town. There is a boardwalk that stretches along the river and the coast. You can walk for miles in pure tranquil beauty. The beach is clean and beautiful. The train and bus stop regularly so it is accessible.CarissaUnited States of America - 10Scored 10

The accommodation is really comfortable for people walking along the Camino to Santiago, that is equipped with everything you could need, but what we liked the most was the kindness of the staff. I would recommend that!

There is a really excellent restaurant in town with a wood-fired pizza oven. They offer a great variety of food and Dao wine at about EUR7. If you're facing the big church in the main plaza, go to the left and keep walking for 100 yards or so and you'll see the restaurant on the left. The service is great. There is also a great, friendly local bar across the road from the restaurant - it's got wooden tables outside. Don't be put off if it looks a bit rough and ready. The staff are great. They also provide very good value food. There is also an excellent bakery in town - just ask for directions and you won't be disappointed.
